Introducing 4 Corners/3 Layers, a new podcast on MLSS in New Mexico

4 Corners/3 Layers: a podcast on MLSS in New Mexico from REC1.

Three layers of support. One region. A lot of questions. 4 Corners/3 Layers is a new podcast from REC1 on New Mexico's Multi-Layered System of Supports (MLSS) and the Student Assistance Team (SAT) process, recorded with Christopher Vian of the New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED). Each episode takes one practical question about MLSS and works through it with the people doing the work.

Why a podcast

MLSS is New Mexico's framework for making sure every student gets the academic, behavioral and social-emotional support they need, in layers: strong core instruction for everyone, then more targeted and more intensive help for the students who need it. Schools across the Four Corners are working out what that looks like day to day. A podcast lets educators hear from colleagues and state leaders on their own time, whether that's on the drive between schools or during a planning period.

Episode 1: the history and evolution of MLSS in New Mexico

The first episode goes back to the beginning:

  • Where it came from. The legislative roots of MLSS and the move from RtI.

  • The whole child. How MLSS brings academic, social-emotional and behavioral supports together.

  • Where it's headed. NMPED's vision for regional alignment and what it means for RECs like ours.
