If Your Child Has an IEP, or Might Need One

If you think your child needs extra help at school, or already has an IEP, start here: your rights under federal and state law, a form to bring to the meeting, and free help if you and the school disagree.

Special education coaching is REC1’s main work with our districts’ teachers. For your child’s own plan, your school’s IEP team is the place to go.

  1. 01
Ask for an evaluation If you think your child needs extra help, ask your district’s special education office to evaluate them. The evaluation costs you nothing.
  2. 02
Know your rights New Mexico’s parent rights notice explains what the school must do, and when. It’s in six languages and ASL.
  3. 03
Get ready for the meeting A two-page form for sharing what you know about your child: what they do well, what worries you, and what helps. Bring it to the meeting.
  4. 04
If you and the school disagree Facilitated meetings, mediation and complaints are all options, and free one-to-one help is available.
