Project #S411B210027

The first year is officially behind us now, with the submission of the Annual Performance Report in March. What a year it was!

The EEDW team worked tirelessly with Early College High School administrators, Higher Education Partners, and our evaluators to redesign the implementation and evaluation processes to meet the project purpose and still adapt to the needs of our implementation partners. As a result, we’re in great shape to begin the research study in project Year 2.

We’ve also submitted our budget adjustment request for Year 2 based on “lessons learned” and project modifications.
At this time, we have 10 ECHSs either signed on through MOUs or in the process of signing MOUs for participation, giving us more than enough participating students to conduct a robust evaluation.
There’s a lot happening in a hurry now. We’re working with the ECHSs to gather student enrollment data, provide “opt-out” options for parents, and generally get the study under way before April ends.
We’re also doing a full web site update to align with project modifications, to make sure our “public face” is accurate and consistent: https://eedw.nmrec1.org/

CLIA

Our CLIA waiver services will be ending in May. We provided training, certification, and site visitations to a wide range of schools throughout the state over the past year, helping schools provide on-site testing for Covid and Influenza.

Our CLIA waiver is good for another year, and we are looking at options for continuing this valuable service to NM schools.

CNDL, Project #P0132562, funded by the Kellogg Foundation and implemented in partnership with Bloomfield Public Schools, is about to reach its conclusion.

The early childhood component ended in March, with an all-day educators’ workshop on a combined approach to SEL and Cultural Relevancy. About 30 teachers from across the REC-1 region spent the day with trainers Abena McNeely and Kristen Santesson to explore new ideas and new strategies about a single approach to welcoming, supporting, and engaging all early learners. The event was hosted at San Juan College.

The dual language component is similarly complete. All that’s left to do is distribute classroom materials to Navajo language teachers in Bloomfield.

SCHOOL LEADER NETWORK

We are very pleased to support the Aztec Municipal Schools’ School Leader Network, funded by the Frost Foundation.
Through the School Leader Network, 10 experienced and respected school administrators will serve as professional mentors for up to 20 novice school administrators. The mentor administrators will communicate regularly and be “on-call” for the new administrators to assist them with their planning and decision making.
REC-1 is serving as the fiscal agent for this important project.

More information about goals, timelines, and opportunities are here: https://nmrec1.org/school-leader-network/

STATE TECHNOLOGY INITIATIVE

REC-1 is continuing to participate in the Statewide Technology Initiative, along with the other 9 RECs in the state. Although the overall initiative has a broad scope, REC-1 is implementing and supporting three components.

1. Tech Bits technology professional development. We have provided 10 trainings to date, with four more to go. In April, we are providing one-hour trainings in Using PowerPoint to Engage Your Audience and in User-friendly Spreadsheets. All sessions are recorded and posted to our web site.

2. Digital Learning Coach, Nan Lasster, continues to reach out to regional schools and districts to provide both online and on-site support for the effective use of technology to enhance students learning. She’s also providing a series of on-line training sessions. Register and see recorded sessions using the links above.

3. Student-run Technology Help DeskKirtland Central High School in Central Consolidated Schools, will be providing live technology support services to educators statewide. This component, primarily managed under the direction of project coordinators at REC-9, is just now getting off the ground. Expect the help desk to be fully implemented and available for the 2023-2024 school year.

In the meantime, all educators and community members can access free technology support from the Education Technology Call Center by visiting
